Northern Script is a Nordic Short Film Script Competition which has been operating since 2017. Northern Script is organized by Mediametka, formerly Metka Centre for Media Education, which has over 60 years of history within the Media Education Field in Finland. Mediametka’s activities are financed by Finland’s Ministry of Education and Culture and through different Nordic and /or European Cultural Funding Programmes. In 2022 The Northern Script project received 2 Nordic fundings: Nordic Culture Point (47 192 €) and Nordisk Kulturfond (100 000 DKK).
The Northern Script concept originates from Mediametka’s idea to showcase the public the incredible talent and invisible expertise of scriptwriting. The fact is that no film would exist without the important work of scripwriters. Northern Script project brings to the light the young newcomers wanting to work behind the films.
When Northern Script was organized for the first time (2017) Mediametka wanted to create a common Nordic network with the three big Children’s and Youth Film Festivals in the Northern countries (BUFF, NUFF & Oulu International Children’s and Youth Film Festival). The Oulu Festivals (since 1982) is an important link to the world of Children and Youth Films in the Nordic countries. It is specially through the Oulu cooperation that the Northern Script project makes Youth Film Culture more visible. In the year 2022 Northern Script project has altogether almost 20 different Film & Youth associated Nordic partners in each Nordic region who collaborates with us via Workshop, Jury and Mentoring work input and some also through financial support.
Originally Northern Script started off as a scriptwriting competition but it seems that the idea of a rivalry doesn’t answer the needs of the young scriptwriters anymore. After the valuable groundwork, the Northern Script has developed into a project which rather than putting the scriptwriters to compete against each other, networks the aspiring scriptwriters together & unites the youth in one common Scriptwriting Camp organized each year during Oulu International Children’s and Youth Film Festival.
Nowadays the purpose of the Northern Script is to network aspiring scriptwriters & encourage Nordic people’s cultural and linguistic identity by giving the youth a possibility to write in their own native language & identify themselves through fictional scriptwriting.
